Leading from Rest: Why Your Identity in Christ is Your Greatest Business Asset.

Welcome to the very first post of our brand-new Friday series! Here at the Association of Christian Business Women (ACBW), we know exactly what your Monday through Thursday looks like. It’s a whirlwind of Zoom calls, endless emails, strategic planning, and maybe: if you’re lucky: a lukewarm cup of coffee that you’ve reheated three times.
But today is Friday. And as we step into the weekend, we want to talk about something that might feel counterintuitive to the world of high-stakes entrepreneurship: Rest.
Specifically, we’re talking about leading from a place of rest. For Christian business women, the world has a very specific script. It’s called "The Hustle." It tells you that if you aren't grinding 24/7, you’re falling behind. It tells you that your value is tied directly to your last quarterly report. But if we are going to practice true faith based leadership for women, we have to flip that script entirely.
Your identity in Christ isn’t just a Sunday morning sentiment; it is quite literally your greatest business asset.
The "Hustle" Mentality vs. The "Abiding" Mentality
We’ve all seen the motivational posters. "Rise and Grind." "Hustle Harder." "Sleep is for the Weak."
In the secular business world, your worth is a fluctuating currency. When sales are up, you’re a genius. When sales are down, you’re a failure. This creates a "hustle" mentality: a state of constant striving where you are trying to prove your worth through your work. It’s exhausting, it leads to burnout, and frankly, it’s not how we were designed to operate.
Contrast that with what Jesus says in John 15:5: "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
This is the "abiding" mentality. In this paradigm, the branch (that’s you and your business) doesn't "hustle" to produce grapes. The branch simply stays connected to the vine, and the life-giving nutrients flow through it naturally. The fruit is a byproduct of the connection, not the source of the effort.
When you lead from rest, you aren't working for your identity; you are working from it. You already have the approval of the King of Kings. Now, you’re just managing His resources.
Why Your Identity is Your Secret Weapon
You might be thinking, "Penny, that sounds lovely for a Bible study, but how does that help me close a deal or manage a difficult employee?"
Great question. Here is how christian women in leadership gain a competitive edge when they anchor their identity in Christ:
1. Emotional Stability in the Storm
In business, things go wrong. Servers crash, shipments get delayed, and sometimes that big contract you were counting on falls through. If your identity is tied to your business success, these moments will crush you. But if your identity is secure in Christ, a business failure is just a data point. It’s a pivot, not a death sentence. You can lead your team with a calm, steady hand because your foundation is unshakeable.
2. Fearless Decision Making
Fear is the greatest enemy of innovation. When you’re afraid of what people will think or afraid of losing your "status," you play it safe. But when you know you are a daughter of the Most High, you gain a holy boldness. You can take the risks God is calling you to take because you know that even if the world calls it a "fail," you are still cherished, chosen, and redeemed.
3. Service-Oriented Leadership
When you don't need your employees or clients to validate your worth, you are free to actually serve them. You move from "What can I get from this person?" to "How can I reflect the love of Christ to this person?" This builds incredible brand loyalty and a company culture that people are dying to be a part of.
If you’re looking to formalize this way of thinking into your actual operations, our Faith-Filled Business Plan is a fantastic place to start. It helps you align your professional goals with your spiritual foundation.
Practical Steps to Move from Striving to Thriving
So, how do we actually do this? How do we stop the mental "treadmill" and start abiding?
Here are three practical ways to start leading from rest this week:
The Morning "Pause"
Before you check emails, before you look at your bank balance, and definitely before you dive into your inbox, spend ten minutes in the "Secret Place." Remind yourself of who you are. You are an ambassador. You are a co-heir with Christ. You are loved with an everlasting love.
Sabbath as a Strategy
We often treat rest as a reward for finishing our work. But God established the Sabbath as a rhythm, not a reward. By stopping one day a week, you are making a radical declaration that the world (and your business) does not depend on you: it depends on God. It is an act of trust that says, "I can do more in six days with God’s blessing than in seven days in my own strength."
Community Connection
Isolation is where the "hustle" thrives. When you are alone, the lies about your worth get louder. This is why the Association of Christian Business Women exists. We need sisters who will remind us of the truth when we’ve had a bad week. Whether it’s through our upcoming events or just a quick chat in our Facebook group, don't do this alone.
The ROI of a Secure Identity
Let’s talk numbers for a second. What is the "Return on Investment" for rooting your identity in Christ?
Higher Retention: People stay where they are treated with the dignity of Christ.
Better Creativity: A rested brain is a creative brain.
Sustainable Growth: You won't burn out in year three because you’re running a marathon, not a sprint.
When we look at the women in our membership, the ones who truly thrive aren't necessarily the ones with the most followers or the biggest offices. They are the ones who have a deep, quiet peace. They know that if it all disappeared tomorrow, they would still be who they are: Daughters of God.
A Challenge for Your Weekend
As you close your laptop today, I want to challenge you to do something "unproductive." Take a walk without a podcast. Sit on your porch with a Vagabond Tumbler full of tea and just be. Ask God: "Lord, where am I trying to prove my worth instead of resting in Your love?"
You are more than your job title. You are more than your revenue. You are a masterpiece in progress.
If you’re feeling inspired to connect with more women who are walking this path, we would love to have you.
Remember, sister: The world says hustle. Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
Go lead from that rest. It’s the best business decision you’ll ever make.
